My girl's name
was Anya. She called me her doll. I called her
my girl. When I came to live with her, she gave
me my name, Tatiana.
My girl showered me with gifts.
I soon had a leather trunk full of clothes. Anya
gave me six dresses, some of which she made herself
with her grandmother's help. My favorite gown
was made of green velvet. It was covered with
seed pearls. I had a hand-painted fan, long gloves,
and a parasol to match. I even had my own hand
mirror, with real mirrored glass!
Anya took me everywhere she
went. We often visited her friend Sasha Levov,
who lived nearby. I enjoyed showing off my pretty
outfits and trading gossip with Sasha's dolls
on our visits.
It was a happy time.
But it was not to last forever.
From Tatiana Comes to
America:
An Ellis Island Story
Making a doll
like Tatiana takes a lot of work. She has many different
parts. Someone had to make each part separately
and then put them all together.
Tatiana's head and shoulders are made of bisque
(You say it like this: bisk). Bisque is a type of
porcelain. You have probably seen a porcelain sink
or dish before.
Bisque begins as clay. First the clay is kneaded
and rolled, just like pizza dough. Then it is baked
in a special oven called a kiln. Next it is painted,
then put in the kiln again so the color will stick.
Tatiana's body, arms, and legs are made of cloth
that was filled with sawdust. Her lower arms, hands,
and shoes are made of leather. Someone stitched
these parts by hand. When each piece of her body
was finished, Tatiana was carefully put together
and dressed.
Your job is a lot easier. Just print the outfits
from this Web site and dress your very own Tatiana
paper doll!
