WHAT'S HAPPENING: RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW! All about photojournalism

My school and library programs are designed for children of all ages. They center on nonfiction writing, journalism, interviews, and photography. I show students how to put a book together using slides, dummies, and layouts. My talks include, but are not limited to: how to come up with an idea, where to find people to interview, the art of a good interview, transcribing tapes and putting a story together, committing another's voice to paper, matching the photographs to the words, writing and rewriting and rewriting and rewriting. There are lots of "HOW TOs" that bring about lively discussions. How to determine truth from fiction? How to write about others in the first person? How to work in distant lands when you do not speak the language? For younger children [k - 6 gr.] I have a slide show that includes "out-takes," mistakes that every professional photographer experiences. Children have great fun trying to figure out "what's wrong with this photograph." I would be happy to work with teachers and librarians to plan an author's visit that fits their needs. I also talk to groups of teachers and librarians.
