I am a children's book editor and author and my presentations focus on both editing and writing, beginning with my work editing popular books including the Junie B. Jones series and the Babymouse series. We talk about what an editor does and kids get the chance to offer their own editorial opinions on favorite books (what kind of cover would you have done for this type of story?) and see early stages (cover sketch) of a book from one of their favorite series.

I then talk about the process of making books focusing on my own books, touching on several and reading one that best works for the age level of the audience. I show various stages from first draft, to editors comments to finished art (everything gets better with revision!).

Throughout there's lots of interaction with the kids (I ask lots of questions during my presentation and answer questions at the end). We discuss where ideas come from and where kids get their ideas, "tricks" writers use like alliteration and onomatopoeia (and I invite kids to come up with the wildest examples they can think of) and  the real history that goes into my nonfiction (i.e. The history of the Macy's Parade and history of girls baseball — including the secret, little known verse of the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame").
