Randi Reisfeld wears several hats in the publishing arena. At the risk of serious ‘hat hair,' her presentation — informative, inspiring, interactive and [hopefully] funny — will include these:
AUTHOR: Randi has written over 60 books, primarily for ‘tweens and teens-non-fiction [celebrity biographies, two have made the New York Times best seller list]; and fiction. She wrote the Clueless series, original stories based on the characters in the movie; as well as six books based on the character of TV's Moesha. Her original fiction series called T*Witches is a Disney Channel TV movie, broadcast October 2005. [NOTE: Although Witches is in the title, this series is completely wholesome, compelling and humorous, and has nothing to do with the occult]. Her newest novel for teens is called Oh, Baby! It is about two nannies working on opposite sides of the USA.
SCHOLASTIC EDITOR: Randi will do a ‘show and tell' of ‘How books get born; How ideas get developed, and go from outline, to manuscript, to bound book.' She will also bring book covers in various stages of development, so kids can see ‘how they did that.' Covers may include those of the Dear America series, Star Wars, and T*Witches.
LICENSING & MEDIA MAVEN: The job she actually gets paid for is Senior Manager of Licensing & Media. Translation: she decides what books Scholastic will publish that ‘tie-in' to current movies [Star Wars, Scooby-Doo], TV shows [The O.C., Zoey 101], music stars [Destiny's Child], toys [Pokemon, Bionicle], and trends. The fun part: She will show a short videotape [under five minutes] of an upcoming movie, TV show, etc. that she is actually considering, and ask the class two questions: would you watch this? Then, would you buy a book based on it?
WRITER: If time allows, she will also tell how she went from the 3rd grader whose work was put up on display as a bad example-to show classmates the wrong way to write-to a successful, fulfilled, multi-tasking writer. She hopes to inspire kids who might have little self-confidence, and share her belief that in one way or another, we are all writers. She also hopes the class will ask a lot of questions!
