Program Description
Maximum number of presentations per day: 3
Presentations are 50 minutes long and can be adjusted to fit your class schedule.
Grades 4+ General author presentation
Rachel will talk about the process of writing a book (from idea to finished product), what it’s like to write with a co-author (and why she thinks everyone should try it), and the publishing process (how long it takes for a book to hit the shelves and how working with an editor improves your writing). She’ll also dispel some myths about writing and being an author.
Grades 6+ Writing workshop (single classroom groups only)
Have a class of aspiring writers? Rachel will discuss aspects of the creative process like creating memorable characters and conflicts, then she’ll lead the students in writing exercises to get them coming up with their own ideas. She’ll also talk about different approaches they can try on their own (including writing with friends) and other ways to tell stories (like comics and screenplays).
Grades 8+ Writing as a career
How do you become an author anyway? Do they just sit at home in their pajamas all day? Rachel will talk about the road to publication, and about the value of persistence and revision. Along the way, she’ll answer questions about what it’s like to be an author and provide resources for student writers.
