"My school visits encourage students to be active participants: writers, illustrators, readers and viewers," says Mary Newell DePalma. "The skills students are learning in their classroom are the same ones I use to create picture books: research, writing and editing.

When students realize this, they feel empowered to write and draw their own unique stories.
