Brief Bio
Kate Klise is an award-winning author of 20 books for young readers, including the bestselling Regarding the Fountain, Dying to Meet You, Deliver Us From Normal, as well as the Little Rabbit series of picture books. She also spent 15 years working as a correspondent for People magazine. Kate knows the challenge of getting a story down on paper and she enjoys sharing her tricks and techniques with writers of all ages. She lives in Norwood, Missouri.
Presentation Description
Suggested Audience: Grades K – 6
In her presentations for the youngest writers (Grades K – 2), Kate tells how she began writing books as a child to give as gifts. She shows children how to take an idea and turn it into a book. With older students (Grades 3 – 6), Kate talks about the writing process: where she gets her ideas, how she begins a book, the art of rewriting, and the importance of sending characters on journeys.
Writing Workshops
Suggested Audience: Grades 3 – 12
Kate also offers small-group writing workshops (25 students or fewer) in which she helps aspiring authors kick off the first chapters of their books or start their college application essays.
Schedule
Kate is flexible regarding the day’s schedule. She often leads a 30-minute program for students in grades K-2, followed by a 50-minute program for grades 3-5, and one or two 50-minute writing workshops for a small group of older students; Other schools prefer three 50-minute sessions for grades 3, 4, and 5.
Honorarium
$1,500 per day plus travel expenses (hotel and airfare/mileage reimbursement)
