"My presentation explores the development of a picturebook, its characters, pacing, and possibilities. It concludes with a drawing demonstration, which is always a big hit. I believe that drawing is something we should all do more of, because it offers a deliciously healthy sense of power. How satisfying it is, to be able to draw pretty flowers or horrible monsters, depending on how one feels!
My mother was Margot Zemach, an excellent children's book illustrator and Caldecott medalist. She had some extremely brilliant drawing advice for children. In Ms. McCaw Learns To Draw, I try to demonstrate her basic message: that drawing is exploratory and expressive- an empowering activity full of descriptive potential, rather than a series of ‘techniques' or rules."
