Elvira Woodruff Author Visit Kit
"My aim for each school visit is high. I want to reach every student, to wake up, and shake up, the natural writer within them. By the end of the day, I want to leave a school full of young writers, who are burning to get their words down on a page and have their voices heard."
— Elvira Woodruff

Presentation Description
Suggested Audience: Grades K – 6 / Professional Groups
2 large presentations and 2 small workshops maximum per day
Elvira has two main presentations, one for Kindergarten, grades 1 and 2, which deals mainly with the making of a picture book and is geared for the picture book crowd. Using wit, wigs, and a suitcase full of wacky props she grabs her young audiences’ attention and then delivers the meaningful message "We all have creative talent and all we need do is develop it. Turn off those television sets and turn on your imaginations.”
The second presentation is an inspirational peek into the creative process of writing a novel, fiction as well as historical fiction. In this assembly Elvira uses slides to take the students into her backyard for inspiration as well as around the world, as she gathers information for her research in Italy, England, and Paris, France.
Virtual Visits
Elvira will welcome students and teachers into her 100-year-old home for an intimate chat about creating books and her own writing process. Her cozy book-filled study usually has a fire crackling in the fireplace and a table piled high with research books and artifacts. It is the favorite room in her house. Along with concrete tips for writing and entertaining anecdotes about her ups and downs in the process of making a book, Elvira also offers visuals from her many research travels. For the most beneficial visit students should have read at least one of her books. The second half of the hour is an opportunity for students to ask questions about any aspect of the writing process.

Elvira has presented at IRA, NCTE, KSRA, NJEA, and many other state conferences. As a keynote speaker Elvira offers a dynamic presentation on researching and writing historical fiction.
