Picture Perfect End-of-Year Student Gifts

By Lindsey Petlak on May 12, 2015

It’s hard to believe, but the end of the year is here! I always struggle with what to give students that will be meaningful (yet fun!) end-of-year gifts. This year, I’m going to create and give a sure-to-please gift I have used for family night favors and Mother’s Day gifts. Key chains with QR code messages are a perfect farewell favor for my kiddos, and I’m sure they will be for yours, too!

MATERIALS:

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Measure the dimensions of the inside “window” of your key chain.

  2. Create a cute “cover” image for your key chain using the computer program and clipart of your choice. We recently used “You’re One in a Minion” for Mother’s Day key chains, but it could work PERFECTLY for end-of-year student gifts, too.

  3. Using a green screen app and following the instructions as I detail in my previous post on creating green screen video, record the video clip that will play when someone scans the QR code on the back of the key chain.

  4. Once your video is complete, upload to YouTube. (Be careful of privacy.)

  5. Copy the link to the shared video from YouTube and past into a QR code generator.

  6. Save each QR code with each student’s initials.

  7. Print the cover images, and cut to fit into the key chain window.

  8. Print, cut, and paste, the QR codes onto the back of the cover image, keeping track of which code goes with which student’s key chain.

  9. Snap the cover back onto the key chain and you’re ready to go!

TIPS and IDEAS:

  • In the past, we had students make video recordings for each other. It was beyond sweet and would work well for end of the year. Each student was randomly paired with another and recorded a message talking about that person’s positive character traits.

  • You as the teacher could record a personal message for each student, wishing them a great summer, talking about your favorite memory with that student, or listing his/her best traits.

  • The student him/herself could record favorite memories from the school year. Then every time they watch the video, it reminds them of all of the great times they had!

  • You might want to add little charms or a handwritten tag message to each key chain.

  • It's probably a good idea to attach a simple note detailing that the QR code on the back is to be scanned using a scanner app on any smart phone or tablet.

  • Clip the finished key chains onto student backpacks before they leave on the last day.

  • If you aren’t able to create the green screen videos, you could always link the QR code to an audio recording, photo, or even a link to a poem or written note.

Be creative and make this project your own! Good luck wrapping up the end of the year . . . and these great student gifts that are super cute, sentimental, and won’t break the bank! Thanks for reading, and see you next week!
