10 Ways to Wrap Up the Year and Avoid Summer Slump

By Lindsey Petlak on May 26, 2015
  • Grades: PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5, 6–8

My school year is winding down really quickly, and my to-do list is piling up as equally fast. As I’m counting down the days, I’ve made my list of top 10 to-do items to wrap up the school year (without losing my mind) and prep work for helping my students avoid the summer slump.

WRAP UP:

From student and volunteer gifts, to classroom celebrations, and certainly not forgetting the dreaded end-of-year classroom cleaning and packing, wrapping up a school year means a never-ending to-do list.

FAVORITE GIFTS:

Celebrate your students, volunteers, and a year’s worth of achievements. These fabulous student gifts are super cute, sentimental, and won’t break the bank!

MEMORY BOOKS:

Say goodbye to a great year in style with these memory books made simple with FREE PRINTABLES! Check out Meghan Everette’s blog post and download the files to make your own books instantly.

CLEAN SWEEP:

Make things easier for yourself in the fall, by leaving your classroom clean as a whistle before you head out for summer. Read these "Tips for End-of-Year Cleaning" by Genia Connell and "Classroom Cleaning Games" by Meghan.

PACK IT UP:

Read how I use Scholastic’s new Word Workshop tool to pack up my classroom in an organized manner, and check out Genia’s tips for packing a setup kit to make fall room organization a snap!

TRADING PLACES:

Are you changing classrooms next year? I’ve done it over and over again, whether moving to a new school or just down the hallway. Read Meghan’s tips for making a classroom change (near or far) easier.

AVOID THE SUMMER SLUMP:

You and your students are equally excited to begin summer, but no one wants to see the “summer slump” happen during the months when school is not in session. Scholastic makes avoiding the summer slump easy with these ready-to-go solutions for reading, writing, and fun with science and math over the break! Check out this summer activity calendar and keep reading for links to printables and subject-specific ideas.

SUMMER BUCKET LIST:

Use FREE PRINTABLES from Genia to create your own student summer bucket lists! These are adorable and have great purpose.

READING BUDDIES CRAFT:

Kick start summer reading fun by having your kiddos create this cute summer reading buddy craft featured in Scholastic's Instructor magazine.

STUDYJAMS!:

Kids LOVE StudyJams! during the school year to help them learn more about tons of math and science topics, and they'll love them during the summer, too!

CONGRATULATIONS on another great school year! I hope the final few days are as exciting as the first. Have a fabulous summer, and see you again in the fall!
