In our word study program, we use this game for all of the long vowel units. We just change the words on the game board each week to correspond to the different vowel patterns for long a, e, i, o and u.

This game is great because it is a creative way to sort words that share a common long vowel pattern. It gives students exposure to many words and helps them begin to recognize general ""rules"" for applying certain patterns to words. For example, students learn that ay tends to be used most often when the long a sound is at the end of a word.
