Reader's Notebook: Chapter Books vs. Picture Books

By  Beth Newingham on November 27, 2012
  • Grades: 3–5

In the Goals and Progress section of each Reader's Notebook, we include a Chapter Books vs. Picture Books: This sheet is used when I have students who should be reading chapter books but who are instead reading picture books the majority of the time.

Third grade is a transitional year for many readers. While students want to read chapter books at the beginning of the year, I find that many readers will fall back into picture books because they are a quick, "easy-to-read" choice. Setting goals in this area is helpful for some readers.

Hello Beth!
I absolutely love all the material you have posted on this website. I am currently completing my requisitions and was wondering if you could recommend any chapter books that you have your students read during the school year. I am looking at trying to get away from the basal stories. I also am a 3rd grade teacher. Any help would be wonderful!
Thank you!
