Write for a Cause This Thanksgiving

Want to get involved with a special project this Thanksgiving? Help me as I deliver food to homebound seniors in New York City on Thanksgiving Day. Being a part of this special event is easy. Inspire your students to create handmade cards and write special messages that will lift spirits and spread joy throughout New York City.

A New Tradition

A few years ago, I started an important Thanksgiving tradition I call Project Give. Instead of cooking a huge meal and celebrating with my family, I hit the streets of Manhattan on Thanksgiving Day to deliver hot meals to people in need. You don’t have to travel to New York City to get involved with this special project. To join me in my adventures, simply ask your students to get creative and make cards to wish the seniors a happy Thanksgiving. I’ll be sure that each senior receives your message of love.

Looking Back at Project Give

Find out how Project Give got started and learn about ways you can get your students to write for a cause.

You’ll find photos from past events, a recommendation of a book to inspire your students, and links to photographs of the seniors you’ll be helping. Please share this with your students to get them exciting about being a part of this special day!

The Power of Writing

So many of you got involved last year, and it made all the difference. With your help, we collected over 2,000 handwritten cards. That’s pretty amazing! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to participate in this activity. Check out "Project Give: The Power of Writing" to view examples of student work and see the journey the cards made to the seniors last year.

Guidelines for Making Cards

What should your cards include?

  • Greeting: "Dear Friend" or "Dear Senior."
  • Have students introduce themselves, but please leave out last names.
  • Encourage students to write about their families and their holiday traditions.
  • Write about your favorite subject, book, sport, or activity.
  • Remind the seniors to enjoy the delicious meal, and let them know that they are not alone.
  • Please include a bright, colorful illustration.
  • Keep it brief and sweet.
  • Get creative and have fun!

So, are you ready to help?! Thanksgiving is less than a month away. Start your card-making project as soon as you can. Have fun making and collecting cards from your students over the next few days. Place your completed cards in a large envelope and mail them to me by November 15th. Thank you for writing for a cause.

Please mail your cards to:
