Yuletide is a word used to mean the Christmas season. It comes from ancient Germany. Yule was a religious festival celebrated for twelve days in winter. It was celebrated around the time of the winter solstice. Many of the traditions of the Yule holiday became part of modern-day Christmas celebrations.
Skiing was once a form of transportation in snowy places such as Russia, Norway, and Sweden. They used skis when traveling and hunting. Today, skiing is mostly for fun and exercise. Some people ski down hills and mountains. Others do cross-country skiing, or skiing across flat ground. Both kinds are Olympic sports.
