Unfunded Mandates

Recently, in Virginia, the state legislature has proposed a bill to make schools add more gym classes to combat childhood obesity. No funding for extra staff means a program will be cut to make room for this new charge if it passes. It’s as if the schools are causing obesity. However, children don’t become obese from eating a school lunch. The problem starts in the home.  I feel that this, like other unfunded mandates, will keep our education system from meeting the learning needs of all children.

It’s interesting that with NCLB, recess time was cut to give more time to reading and math. Morning and afternoon recess provides students with exercise and play and clears their minds so more learning can take place. I say bring back recess and give students a much needed break!
