Reading for School Only

Two kinds of readers disturb me: (1) Students who are two or more years below grade level and don’t read because they can’t read grade level materials. For teachers it’s a challenge to motivate students in this group to find independent reading books they can read on topics they care about. For many in this group reading at school and at home is no longer joyful. (2) Students who have reading skill and expertise and succeed at school but rarely read on their own at home. Some in this group even make it to Honors classes, but they have no love of or joy in reading.

I worry about both groups, we all have them in our classes and invite you to share suggestions for motivating and engaging students in either or both groups.

Both these types of students are indeed *so* very frustrating. I have spent countless hours at bookstores, readings, author signings, etc. to amass over 3000 YA books in my own classroom; I've gone to workshop after workshop after workshop about instilling the love of reading; and I try my hardest to merge technology and web tools into my students' reading assignments, and these problems still confound me.

I am a Mid-High Reading Teacher and motivation is my biggest problem in the classroom. I have spent hundreds of dollars of my own money building a classroom library with multiple genres,reading levels, and interest levels. I create lessons that will generate some enthusiasm but they fall short. It is very frustrating.
