1.   Choose one mythical character from the book Anemone gives to Nate Peale. Then, based on Nate's description, draw a rough sketch of that creature or person. Find someone in your class who has drawn the same character. Compare your sketches. How are they different? How are they similar?

There are several descriptions of mythological characters including Hydra (page 80), Minotaur (page 85), and Persephone / Hades (page 114). Also, there are numerous references to Hercules, Daedalus, and Icarus.

2.   Imagine you are Nate. Several years have passed and John Worth has returned to the big city. Write John a letter. Be sure to tell him everything that is happening on the farm and ask him about his life, too.

Responses will vary.

3.   Nate learns one foreign word in the story: parakalo. Make a list of any other foreign words you know. (Don't worry about spelling!) Then, write one of those words down the side of a sheet of paper. Use each letter in that word as the start of new words based on places, people, and events from the story.

Responses will vary.
