Ask children to name animals that can be pets. Then read the title of the book aloud and have children guess what kind of animal Willie's pet might be.
AFTER READING
Were children surprised that Willie's pet was a worm? Ask: Who thinks that a worm is a good pet? Why or why not? Encourage children to share their ideas of what makes a good pet. Jot down children's thoughts on the chalkboard. Does everyone in the class agree with each of the items on the list? Why or why not?
