About this book
Overview
I use Time for Bed for many purposes. I use it to teach about word choice, repetitive text, rhythm, and rhyme. I also use it when we learn about Mem Fox in an author study. My students like the rhyming words in the story. They also love making a podcast and hearing themselves.
Objective
Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and non-print texts
Materials
- Time for Bed by Mem Fox
Set Up and Prepare
From looking at the book cover, have the students predict why Mem Fox may have written this book.
Directions
Have the students list the rhyming words in the book. Talk about the word choices that Mem Fox used in the story. Have the students rewrite the story using other animals and their babies.
Lesson Extensions
Create a class podcast using the words from Time for Bed or the story they wrote. On a Mac, use GarageBand to create a podcast. On a PC use Audacity for recording. Each student records a part of Time for Bed. After the voices are recorded, add a beat or music to the podcast. Enhance the podcast by adding photos or their scanned drawings. If a computer isn't available, a recording could be made with a tape recorder or with an iPod and a voice recorder attached. The podcast can be shared online through iWeb on a Mac or shared with other classes through the school server. Consult with your technology support person about how to do this.
