Teaching Poetic Devices

Overview

Make a strong introduction for poetry by revealing the poetic devices embedded in music – the language of youth.

Objective

Students will:
  1. Identify six poetic devices: alliteration, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, rhyme, and simile
  2. Determine the purpose of poetic devices as either emphasizing meaning or the sound of words
  3. Respond to a journal entry
  4. Transfer learning while becoming the “teacher” of an assigned poetic device

Lesson 1: Musical Poetry

Culminating Activity

Students will work in small groups and become “teachers” as they educate their classmates about poetic devices found in their favorite songs.
