VOCABULARY

The following words from the story may be unfamiliar to students. After introducing the words and having students look up their meanings, you might play a game of tic-tac-words with the class. Begin by numbering a master list of the definitions. Have each student make a game board like the one shown here, with nine of the words on it. Each student's board should be different. Then read the numbered definitions aloud, one at a time. If students have the word for a definition, they cover the word with a slip of paper and write the definition number on the paper. The first student to complete a row across, down, or diagonally wins, provided that he or she has matched the correct definitions. Students can exchange game boards for further rounds.
