Vocabulary
Like many authors of fine children's literature, E. B. White did not “write down” to his audience. As a result, students most likely will find unfamiliar words in this book. For example, words from Chapter 1 might include shinnying, worsted, solemnly, trifle, slimy.
Activity/Using Context
You might list unfamiliar words on the chalkboard for each chapter. If the context is helpful, write the sentence or part of the sentence in which the word is used. Underline the words that are clues to the word meaning.
| shinnying | he could climb lamps by shinnying up the cord |
| trifle | said George, who was a trifle annoyed |
