About this book

- Bowls (optional)
- Large spoon
- Stones
- Vegetables (real or pretend)

- Groups
DIVIDE the class into three groups. Invite each group to choose one of the following scenes to act out:
- Marie and Henri arrive in town and go from house to house asking for food and then a pot.
- Marie and Henri make the soup.
- Marie and Henri dish out the soup, everyone eats it, and the mayor thanks them.
ENCOURAGE children to decide who will play each character, what they will say and do.
SUGGEST that children use props.
INVITE the groups to act out their scenes in order. When they have finished, they might like to discuss what was most challenging about re-creating Stone Soup.
Draw and Label a Favorite Scene
MATERIALS:
- Drawing paper
- Markers or crayons
SUGGESTED GROUPING:
- Partners or individuals
TALK with children about the scenes that make up the story.
ASK children to choose a favorite scene to draw and to include these things in their pictures: who (who is in this scene?); what (what is happening?); and where (is it the town square?). Have them add labels to their drawings that tell who, what, and where. Encourage children to add story words whenever possible.
PROVIDE time for children to share their drawings with the class.
GRADE by checking to see that children include answers to the questions who, what, and where.
