Language Arts: Communicating

Remind students that little Willy and his grandfather use signals to communicate. For example, if Grandfather put one finger up, it meant “I'm hungry,” while two fingers meant “water.” Have the class devise a hand code to use for simple statements. Then try using it! Possible messages to convey might include:

• Raise your hand.
• Take your seat.
• May I get a drink?
• I'm finished.
