About this book
- The Shelf Elf by Jackie Mims Hopkins
Set Up and Prepare
Tell or read The Elves and the Shoemaker by Jacob Grimm. The Shelf Elf starts where this book ends. List the Shelf Elf tools on the board, wall or bulletin board. he second graders can refer to these tools while you are reading the book. The K-1 students should be made aware that they are listed up on the wall.
Demonstrate use of various tools: shelf marker, book mark, how books should look on the shelf. Discuss the pages about torn pages, scribbling, and chewing. Discuss where the students can put their books to keep them safe at home.
Demonstrate at the actual library shelves the use of the shelf marker. Hand out book marks. Demonstrate how to turn the pages of the book to keep them from getting torn. Give out book/library stickers/stamps to those students following the rules.
Supporting All Learners
This lesson is short--students are only sitting about 15 minutes (especially if you tell the The Elves and Shoemaker story rather then read it) then they are up moving around the library. The students are actually using the shelf markers and book marks with the books they are going to be checking out.
Follow through each week by going over the rules.
