Overview

I use The Princess and the Pizza as part of a unit on "fractured fairy tales." Students enjoy hearing about the other related tales as they crop up in this book. Students love taking on different roles, and the costumes and scenery that accompany it.

Objective

Students will "create radio scripts, audio- or videotapes, or digital camera presentations for display or transmission." --Massachusetts English/Language Arts Framework

Materials

  • The Princess and the Pizza by Mary Jane Auch
  • video camera
  • costumes, props, and backdrops

Set Up and Prepare
If you decide to dive into this project, involve the art and music teachers. They can integrate scenery, costumes, music, and sound effects into their teaching. Also, a room parent can be a wonderful resource to help gather and create costumes.

Directions

Assign or have students choose roles. Allow students time to rehearse, using dialogue from the book, as well as any that they have written. Use a video camera to record the production, and schedule a time to share it with students.

Lesson Extensions

Have students create posters or other advertising to invite neighboring classrooms to the performance, or the videotape showing.
