One Fish, Two Fish Pattern Headbands

Young readers have fun with Dr. Seuss' language and experiment with physical pattern making.

Overview

This hands-on activity lets young readers have fun with Dr. Seuss' language and experiment with physical pattern making.

Objective

  • Gain an appreciation for the word play and rhyme featured in Dr. Seuss' work.
  • Identify, produce, and extend patterns.

Materials

Set Up and Prepare

  • Create a fish template by drawing multiple fish (roughly 2” X 4”)
  • Use your copy machine and colored construction paper to make one sheet of red and one of blue for each student.
  • Cut out some sample fish to have on hand when you give directions.

 

Directions

  1. Read aloud One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
  2. Show students the red and blue construction paper fish. Ask for ideas on different patterns that could be made with them (i.e., two red fish, one blue one, two red, one blue, etc). Model the patterns for the class.
  3. Working at their seats, students should draw seaweed along the length of their sentence strip.
  4. Have them write their name on the other side of the sentence strip.
  5. After cutting out their fish, they should experiment to see what patterns they can make. Once they have settled on a pattern, they can glue their fish to their strip.
  6. Have a classroom assistant or teacher assist in the sizing and stapling of the sentence strips to fit around each child's head. The staple should be pointing out so that it doesn’t poke a student in the head.

Supporting All Learners

Have illustrated directions available in a chart format. Pre-teach pattern making using red and blue blocks.

Lesson Extensions

  • Let students explore pattern possibilities with the addition of a third color.
  • Create a fish themed bulletin board.

Home Connection

Send home a set of construction paper fish that have been copied onto two different colors. Parents and children can create new patterns.

Assignments

  • Use Play-Doh to create a three dimensional version of the headband pattern.
  • Create a number book in the shape of a fish.

Evaluation

  • Was I clear in my directions?
  • Was I setup and prepared with the proper materials?
  • Would I do anything differently next time?
