Materials
- In My World by Lois Ehlert
- a marker
- chart paper
- construction paper (Any color/s will do.)
- scissors
- pencil
- glue stick
Set Up and Prepare
Trace the "ing" related pictures onto the construction paper and cut them out. Using the lines on the chart paper as a guide, glue the pictures in a column, down the left-hand side of the paper. Use the marker to label the pictures, leaving space to add "ing" with students. (Example: For the "creeping bugs" picture, you should write "creep bugs.")
Directions
Talk about how adding "ing" changes a word. Verbally try adding it to some words. Explain that you will be writing it on the chart paper, recreating text from the book. Fill in the "ing" for "creeping bugs." Once you have modeled that, have students take turns coming up to the chart and filling in the missing "ings."
Supporting All Learners
You may want to add "ing" to your word wall. I have it posted with a line to remind students that it is not a word by itself. "___ing"
Lesson Extensions
Students can try generating their own list of "ing" words. Give them time to illustrate them.
