Set Up and Prepare
Using computer clip art, create sheets of the following pictures: watering can, flower pot, flower, tree, stone, worm, bird, bee, butterfly, and snail. For each of these items, copy them onto their own sheet, multiple times. (I like to use clip art from Office Online. You can access it by creating a Word document and going to: Insert, Picture, Clip Art, Clip Art on Office Online.) Cut the clip art pictures apart. You will need enough pictures to have the following pieces for each student: 1 watering can, 2 flower pots, 3 flowers, 4 trees, 5 stones, 6 worms, 7 birds, 8 bees, 9 butterflies, and 10 snails. Students can trim the pictures if any follow up cutting is in order.
Have students draw a horizontal line across their construction paper. This will be the horizon line they use for their garden scene. Have students take turns counting out the various clip art pictures, and gluing them to their construction paper. Next, use the markers to add any remaining details. When students are done, they can work in teams, trying to find and count each other's objects.
You may decide to have students record the quantities of the clip art objects at the bottom of their illustration.
