About the Book

Three children describe a menagerie of animals and the sounds they make. Purring cats, snoring bears, mooing cows, and quacking ducks are all pictured in bright bold colors. This is a perfect read-along book for the younger set-the catchy, rhyming text begs to be read aloud. Young children won't be able to resist roaring, hooting, and neighing along!

Materials

  • Mice Squeak, We Speak
  • Clay
  • Mural paper
  • Paint, brushes
  • Pencils or markers

Animals of Clay

Ask children to look at the animal on each page of Mice Squeak, We Speak. How many different animals do they see? Children can make a list of animals in the book.

  • Invite children to choose animals from the list to model from clay.
  • Encourage a small group of children to paint a mural of an outdoor scene (or different habitats) to display behind the animals. Children can write the names of their animals on small pieces of paper and tape them to the mural.

Observation

Notice how children refer to the book for information as they model the animals and paint the mural.
