Making a Difference Through Civic Action
- Grades: 3–5, 6–8, 9–12
Students from elementary school through high school can make a difference in their communities and become participatory citizens. In these engaging lessons, students develop ideas to improve their local community; take positions to actively influence community decision making and development; and consider one or more of these issues from local, national, and international perspectives. During this process, they develop deeper understandings of the policymaking process.
- Publicly state a perspective on an important community issue
- Support their perspective thoughtfully, using information culled from several resources
- Demonstrate listening skills and the ability to engage in civic discussion
- Show an understanding of different policy perspectives and the importance of listening to different perspectives when forming their own views towards policy
