Set Up and Prepare
Wash the fruit.
Explain that students will be preparing a special "half" fruit salad. Demonstrate how to use the scissors to cut a paper plate in half. Using the plastic knife, demonstrate how to cut the strawberries and grapes in half. Stress the importance of being careful with the knife.
Divide students into pairs and have them wash their hands. Keep an eye on students to make sure they keep their hands clean. Also be sure to watch how they handle the plastic knives. Working as a team, they should cut a plate in half, and do the same with their grapes and strawberries, placing them on their plate. Once their "half" fruit salad is done, eat and enjoy!
This activity can be modified for a study of fractions. Try cutting the foods into thirds or fourths.
