Letters to Poets Unit Plan
Students explore poems by historical and contemporary poets through discussions of voice and writing letters to poets. By Madeleine Fuchs Holzer, EdD, for the Academy of American Poets
- Grades: 6–8, 9–12
In the spirit of Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, in which Rilke replies to letters from an aspiring poet asking for his advice, this series of activities for the classroom allows students to explore and interact with poetry by writing letters to poets.
You can use the lesson plans one right after the other or separate them as you integrate poetry with other areas of your curriculum. The activities are designed to reach diverse learners, but if you need to adapt them further, feel free to do so.
