Materials

  • Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola
  • I Can Draw Animals by Ray Gibson
  • From Pictures to Words by Janet Stevens
  • Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Ahlsburg
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • Drawing paper
  • Kidspiration by Inspiration Software, Inc. (Mac or PC version)
    or chart paper, or a blackboard for brainstorming

Set Up and Prepare

  • Sharpen pencils
  • Check Kidspiration connection to large screen monitor

Directions

Step 1: Read Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola. Talk to students about keeping their dreams.

Step 2: Introduce I Can Draw Animals (or use another How to Draw book). This type of book can help give young children a start in observing new details in drawing.

Step 3: Demonstrate various ways to manipulate crayons or pencils to get different lines widths, textures, and shapes.

Step 4: Have the children use crayons or pencils to draw their best pictures. (They may want to draw more than one.)

Step 5: Hang their best drawing on a bulletin board or on the wall. Or create a class book from the drawings.

Step 6: Using Kidspiration to list what the children learned about drawing.

Lesson Extensions

Read From Pictures to Words by Janet Stevens. Chart the steps involved in illustrating a book.

Read Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Ahlsburg. Draw a picture from an ant's perspective or from a giraffe's perspective.

Assess Students

Teacher observation will assess student participation in listening to the book and drawing their best picture.
