Teaching Tip:
Activating background knowledge, creating questions about the topic, and developing a purpose for reading help students to become more thoughtful, engaged readers. The KWL organizer guides students through this three-step process — a process they can add to their list of comprehension strategies.
Teaching Tip for Back to School:
Have students use the KWL chart to learn about their classmates. Each student can write a short blurb about another student and organize the information they know and want to learn on the KWL chart. The blurbs can be compiled into a book or put in a newspaper format to be used as a reference guide to and for the class.
