Set Up and Prepare
Find the page at the center of the book the shows Trixie motioning back to the laundromat. (This page features three speech bubbles above Trixie.) Make a copy of the page, and white out the text within the bubbles.
Point out the speech bubbles in the book and talk about their purpose.
Reread the page from the book that has Trixie and the speech bubbles. Have a conversation about what she is probably saying, and what students might say if they were in a similar situation.
Have students use their copy of the page to generate their own writing, filling in the speech bubbles. Be certain to have alphabet charts available for students to refer to when sounding out words.
When everyone is done writing, have them share their work with their peers.
Supporting All Learners
For younger students you may need to enlarge the speech bubbles, as they tend to have larger print.
Students can rewrite the story from Trixie's point of view.
