I'm a Seed Discussion Guide and Extension Activity
- Grades: PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5
- Ask children to tell you what they think a seed is. Show them the cover of the book.
- Have a volunteer point out the two seeds on the cover.
- Ask students: What do you think the girl is going to do with her seeds? How do you know?
- In the book, one seed grows into a marigold plant and the other, a pumpkin plant. Have children brainstorm names of flowers, fruit, and vegetables.
- Divide a sheet of chart paper into three columns: Flowers, Fruits, Vegetables. Record students' suggestions in the proper columns.
- Children can draw the items listed and paste them under the correct headings.
Make simple sponge gardens for students to observe over time.
- Different kinds of small seeds (grass seed works well)
- Sponges cut into small pieces, one piece per student
- Paper cups, one per student
- Water jugs
- Liquid plant food
- Space along a windowsill
Step 1: Distribute seeds, sponge pieces, and paper cups to students. Tell students what kind(s) of seeds they have.
Step 2: Have students soak their sponge pieces thoroughly, then place them in the cups.
Step 3: Help students add more water to the cups. Explain that there should always be water in the cup so that the sponge does not dry out.
Step 4: Have students sprinkle their seeds on top of the sponge.
Step 5: Help students label their cups with the name of the seeds.
Step 6: Leave the cups to sit until the plants begin to sprout.
Step 7: When leaves appear, add liquid plant food to the water to supply nutrients.
Step 8: Line up the sponge plants along a windowsill.
