Write these words on the chalkboard:

Ask students what the words have in common. (They all end the same way; they are the names for very large numbers.) Explain that million comes from a Latin word, mille, which means thousand. A million is a thousand 1,000s.
Activity/Making Connections
Challenge students to find other words that begin the way million does. Start a list on poster paper, and add to it as students come up with more words.
