Overview

Students love Jan Brett's timeless tales, and Honey...Honey...Lion! is no exception. I include it when my class does a Jan Brett author study. Students love chasing one another around the circle.

Objective

Students will "use a variety of ...locomotor (walking, running, skipping, hopping, galloping, sliding, jumping, leaping), ...skills as individuals and in teams." --Massahusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework

Materials

  • Honey...Honey...Lion! by Jan Brett

Set Up and Prepare
Be sure to have a place in mind where students will be able to form a circle and do some running.

Directions

Tell students that they will be playing a game of "Honey, Honey, Lion." This is basically a game of Duck, Duck, Goose with a few changes.

Students will form a circle and sit on their bottoms. One student will start off by walking around the circle and tapping classmates' shoulders saying "honey" with each tap. They should pick one student that they will say "lion" to, when they tap them. The tapped student will then chase the "tapper" clockwise around the circle and try to tag him before he can sit down in his spot.

Whether or not the tapper is tagged, they should sit in the tapped student's spot and the tapped student should start over with the whole process of tapping. (In this game nobody sits in the middle of the circle.

Periodically remind students to raise a hand to show if they have had a turn as the tapper. The current tapper should tap someone who has not yet had a turn.

Supporting All Learners

It's good to model what a gentle tap looks and feels like. It's also important to remind students not to crouch, but to sit on their bottoms.
