BEFORE READING
Have children share their prior knowledge of snakes. Jot down on the chalkboard both the facts and misconceptions children tell you.
AFTER READING
Ask students if they learned more about snakes from the book. Did anything surprise them? This might be a good time to point out that this is a nonfiction bookâit gives the facts about a subject. Review the list of students' statements before they read the book. Put a star next to any statements that were found in the book. Are there any statements not found in the book? Do students think these statements are true? How can they find out? Have children add any new facts to the list that they have learned from the book.
