BEFORE READING

Ask if anyone knows who Helen Keller was. Have children look at the cover of the book. Choose a volunteer to read the title. Based on the title, have another child point to Helen Keller. How did this child know who to point to? (Elicit the response that the title has the word girl in it.) Tell children that the woman on the cover is Helen Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan. Ask children to read to find out why these women were so remarkable.

AFTER READING

What did children think of Hellen Keller? How did they feel when she understood what w-a-t-e-r meant? Ask children to name some words that they think describe Helen Keller. Keep a list of these words. Ask children if they have ever experienced the same feelings as Helen Keller did. Ask: How did you feel when you were learning to read? How did you feel when you realized you could read? Invite children to provide other example.
