BEFORE READING

Show children the cover. Explain that germs are microscopic, which means that they can't be seen except under a microscope. Point out that for this book the illustrator has made the germs bigger than they really are. Ask children if they think germs have eyes, noses, and mouths? Why do they think the illustrator drew them this way? Tell children to look for the ways people can protect themselves from germs as they read this book.

AFTER READING

Encourage children to share their responses to this book. (Elicit responses such as, funny, silly, germs do a lot of things, germs cause many illnesses, I can protect myself from germs.) Then have children name some things they learned about germs from the book.
