The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass:
Without an education, Frederick Douglass wouldn't have been able to write his autobiography. Enslaved people who didn't have access to an education couldn't write down what happened to them. They relied on other art forms. Read aloud excerpts from Douglass's autobiography to your students. Let groups of students choose other ways to bring his writing to life. They may wish to act out the scene, illustrate or choreograph it, write a poem or song, or retell it as a form of oral history.
