Students will "retell or dramatize traditional literature." --Massachusetts English/Language Arts Curriculum Framework

Materials

  • An Extraordinary Life: The Story of a Monarch Butterfly by Laurence Pringle
  • A body sock--This is a Lycra body suit, with a Velcro flap. They are often used to help students become better aware of spatial sense.

Set Up and Prepare
Because head lice are a concern, you may choose to have individual shower caps available to children when they take their turn inside the body sock.

Directions

Have students take turns in the body sock. Give them time to wriggle around, experiencing the metamorphosis of a butterfly.

Lesson Extensions

Use mosquito netting to create large wings and have students pretend to be butterflies.
