Overview

The combination of humorous text and illustrations in Do Not Open This Book! prove irresistible to students both young and old. Students also enjoy finding the humor on the book jacket as well as within the book.

Objective

Materials

  • Do Not Open This Book! by Michaela Muntean
  • an assortment of empty cardboard boxes
  • colored markers
  • large index cards
  • tape

Set Up and Prepare

Read through the book on your own, paying particular attention to the labeled boxes of words. Some of these boxes include objects, verbs, animals, nouns, and dangerous words. Be sure to point out the boxes of words to students.

Decide which labels you want to use on your boxes. Use the index cards and tape to label the boxes accordingly.

Directions

Have students use index cards and colored markers to create words that will be sorted into the labeled boxes.  Encourage students to really savor the words, taking time to be artistic in their handwriting.

If you are not providing a list of words, or using the words in the book, be sure to have dictionaries on hand, or access to dictionary.com on the computer.

Once all the words have been created, spread the cards out so they can all easily be seen.  Have students take turns placing them in the correct boxes.

Supporting All Learners

Once students are familar with this activity, make it available as a center.

Lesson Extensions

Have students sort the words before labeling the boxes.

Use art materials like pipe cleaners, puffy paint, yarn, and glitter to create the words.
