Discovering the Deep: Teaching Genre and Research Skills With a Focus on Oceans
Introduce research and reading skills as part of a unit on oceans.
- Grades: 3–5, 6–8
Content units that interest students provide an excellent opportunity to develop your students' reading and research skills. Use the two lesson plans here, which introduce research techniques and genres of writing, to wrap up an ocean life unit.
Students will need to have background knowledge about animal classification and the four ecosystems of the ocean before selecting an ocean animal to research in Lesson One: Under the Sea. Before they begin the genre study in Lesson Two: Genres, Genres Everywhere, students should experience several fictional and non-fictional readings about the ocean.
- Answer the big questions about the ocean and write a report about an ocean animal.
- Identify at least four different writing genres that they have experienced while reading about the ocean.
