Clifford Follows the Rules and So Do We!
Use this craft to set your classroom rules at the start of the school year.
- Grades: PreK–K
- Unit Plan:
On the first day of school, students make a Clifford headband and sign in the shape of a large bone, with the classroom rules mounted on the sign.
- Follow step-by-step directions.
- Be able to list the four classroom rules.
- Be able to respond that rules are important because they keep us safe.
- Clifford Goes to Dog School by Norman Bridwell
- Chart paper
- Red and white construction paper
- Tongue depressors
- Classroom rules, either your own or the following, typed and printed on white paper:
Our Classroom Rules:
1. Be a friend.
2. Listen to the teacher.
3. Raise your hand.
4. Clean up messes.
Set Up and Prepare
- Type and print copies of the rules for each student.
Step 1: Read Clifford Goes to Dog School by Norman Bridwell with your class.
Step 2: List the mischief that Clifford gets into on a piece of chart paper.
Step 3: Discuss what rules are, and note that they keep us safe. As a class, brainstorm the rules Clifford should follow if he went to your school.
Step 4: List and explain these examples of class rules (or rules of your own):
- Be a friend.
- Listen to the teacher.
- Raise your hand.
- Clean up messes.
Step 5: Have students cut a strip from the red contruction paper, about two inches wide. Staple the ends together to create a ring for the headband.
Step 6: Ask students to draw two long dog ears onto the red construction paper and cut them out. Then, staple or glue them to either side of the headband.
Step 7: Have students draw a large bone shape on a piece of white construction paper, then cut it out and glue it to the tongue depressor.
Step 8: Glue rules to the bone.
Step 9: Wear headband and hold rules.
Review the consequences for not following classroom rules.
Have students recite the classroom rules to three people in their home and explain how to follow each rule.
