Overview

Delving deep and uncovering connections is what the book Chasing Vermeer is all about. In this Flashlight Readers session, students develop problem solving skills while exploring fine art and learning about creative expression.

Objective

Students will:

  1. Study the writing process and make connections with a real author's experience
  2. Write their own mystery story, following the writing process
  3. Learn essential elements that characterize different painting styles
  4. Identify specific works of art painted by one of 13 masters
  5. Analyze and further research one painter and style of artwork
  6. Create a painting that follows the principles of the art style they've chosen
  7. Apply problem solving skills to solve pattern puzzles
  8. Use logic and decision making to create a puzzle challenge
