This Unit Plan supports Celebrating 100 Years of Flight Activities

Overview

Scholastic.com's 100 Years of Flight allows your students to explore the history, science and adventure of humankind's journey through the air. The online activities include the first flight of the Wright brothers in 1903, the life and times of pilot Amelia Earhart, and the exploration of space. As students explore the activities, they can build their own virtual plane, write a newspaper article, build a timeline, and participate in a paper airplane contest.

Objective

Students will:

  1. Use Web technology to access information
  2. Draw a conlcusion based on the results of an experiment in decision making
  3. Participate in active writing activities and peer review
  4. Distinguish between an observation and a fact
  5. Investigate change over time to gain perspective on how the ability to fly has affected our nation's politics and culture
  6. Interpret information from timelines
  7. Compare and contrast the accomplishments of several pilots and scientists
  8. Create a timeline using information and media from their own research
  9. Reflect on what has been learned after reading by formulating ideas, opinions, and personal responses
